Corporal Turnbull was a young man, but he was
not a man to be trifled with. He had come back from Dunkirk with all his
equipment correct and accounted for. He kept his kitten in his pocket. He was admired
by the trainee soldiers as their hero, and they used to tell each other that he
was so tough that you could hammer nails into him without his noticing it. He
had complete control over his emotions. When Private Quelch offended him with
his impudence and audacity, he did not lose temper. He listened to Quelch’s
arguments patiently. He even offered him to give lecture to the squad. However,
he knew his power. He knew how to hit back mortally. He taught Quelch the most
befitting lesson by appointing him as permanent cook in the mess kitchen.
