Dr Oliver Wendell Holmes had invited Helen and Miss Sullivan to call on him one Sunday afternoon in early spring. Helen had just learned to speak at that time. Wendell Holmes was found seated in a big armchair in his library by an open fire which glowed and crackled on the hearth. A contemplative and reflective man, he was often to be found immersed in profound thought. He seemed to have been a voracious reader because his Helen instinctively knew that his library was full of books due to the odour of print and leather in the room. He was moved by Helen during their meeting which gradually led to a beautiful friendship between the two. Helen came to love the man as well as the poet. Wendell Holmes was one of Helen's favourite poets. Although Helen had been in awe of such a great man, her subsequent meetings with the man opened up a different side to the poet as a person. He was a profound thinker and quite emotional in his responses to life, Helen came to see that side and adore him more for his humane touch. Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes was an American poet, professor and a lecturer. He was a person well settled in life and a lover of books. He had invited Helen and Miss Sullivan to visit him and was deeply impressed by Helen’s ability to recite poems like ‘The Chambered Nautilus’ by heart. He immediately noticed her love for reading books and asked her to examine different things for him. They met many times after this and shared their love for literature.
