Dunstan Cass is the son of the local Squire of Raveloe, in Warwickshire, England. He is someone with no ethics or culture, spending most of his time drinking and gambling. He is disliked by the womenfolk of Raveloe, for his rude and lewd behaviour.
Totally selfish, with only his interests in mind, he does not even hesitate to work against his own brother and blackmail him for money. Dunstan Cass has all the negative qualities that can be attributed to a person – such as, he is arrogant, vain, greedy and dishonest. He very well knows these qualities about himself, but ignores it and tries to cover it up before others. His greed for money, along with his gambling habits makes him steal two bags of gold from Silas Marner, before he disappears.
Published in 1861, Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot. Prominent for its discussion on topics as varied as religion, community and industrialisation and also for its flamboyant use of realism, Silas Marner is but a simple story about a cloth weaver.
Dunstan is Squire Cass's younger son who is into gambling and drinking and is least concerned about anyone else. Dunstan manipulates his brother Godfrey into giving him money to fund his vile hobbies.
Dunstan kills Godfrey's horse and while waling back decided to robe Silas Marner. Dunstan's body was later found at the bottom of a stone pit at Marner's cottage.
