George is the second main character in the story "Three Men in a boat ". He is a bank clerk who works on saturdays. He also joins the boating trip up the river . He has some good ideas which help the three friends during the trip. It is George's idea to take the river trip and camping out during the rainy season. It was George who suggested that ' we must not think of the things we could do with, but only of the things that we can't do without ' . Jerome sarcastically calls it ' a sensible idea'. Sometimes his ideas were not practical. Jerome says' George was a miserable imposter, who could evidently have known nothing whatever about the matter ' . He is made fun of by his friends for having large feet and sleeping a lot. George buys a banjo for the trip. He thinks that he will learn to play it from a book. His friends are skeptical. They do allow him to try and Jerome describes the situations with sarcastic politeness.
