George was one of the friend of the author Jerome K Jerome. He was one of the three men who went on the boat. He was a clerk at Barclays bank. He used to sleep at the bank during the working hours from 10'o clock to 4'o clock each week day. On saturdays too he slept till 2 pm when the bank closed.
He was living in a room just behind the same house (bank). He shared a room with the landlady to save money. He loved the theatre. He had a good friend in her. He did not marry. He became the manager of the bank later on in the story.
He appears a sort of lazy, confused and not very intelligent person. He shared some pleasantries with his friends. He liked to take life as it came and took it easy and casual. He was bad player of music on his banjo. He was not a quick learner and could not quickly learn rowing a boat. He wore clothes that befit his position. He spoke well with friends. He was a usual selfish ordinary English man living in London.
