The poem Govinda’s Disciple by Rabindranath Tagore describes the traits of an ideal master and his disciple who has not been able to break the shackles of materialism.

Explanation:

A Character Sketch of Govinda

  • Govinda was a great teacher who showed the right path to his disciples by living it.
  • For him, action speaks louder than words.
  • Therefore, he explained to his disciple, Raghunath, the greatest lesson in life, that is, material possessions never take anyone to divinity, rather they act as an obstacle in the way of divinity.
  • He could tell him this through words, but Govinda chose to act the same to make him realise the significance of coming out of the materialistic world.

A Character Sketch of Raghunath

  • Raghunath is Govinda's disciple, and he is imprisoned by materialism.
  • He thought that wealth would bring him closer to his guru, Govinda.
  • He was always blind and continued to attach importance to worldly and materialistic pleasures.
  • Raghunath is the representative of modern man, who lives in the dark world of materialism.
  • Thus, this poem paves the way to the truth of the salvation of lost souls by clearly showcasing how to separate the physical world from the spiritual world.
