Mr. Abel Merryweather is an old man who at the last leg od his life comes to realize tje bitter truth of life, i.e. more than him, his wealth and possessions matter to his daughters Amelia and Elizabeth. Being a widower, he has to live with either of his daughters, but they are not very keen on having him in their house until they come to know that he would give all his peoperty to the one with whom he would be living when he dies.
The Slaters take him as dead and try to pinch his bureau, clock and slippers before Jordans arrive. The moment he wakes up feom his slumber and comes downstairs where both her daughters' families are discussing about his death and premium he had to pay amd the like. The only person who loves him and who voices genuinity is little Victoria who questions her parrnts' actions at such time when her grandpa lay dead.
He is taken aback by it and decides that he would marry the widow of Mr. Shorrock, change his will and start his life anew. Obviously, when his daughters have no care and concern for him he is left to make a choice ànd live with someone who wants him for what he is and not for his wealth.
His character shows the pain of the aged parents. In this materialistic world where money has become more important than blood relations.
