Poos Ki Raat - Bikhare Moti (Hindi)
Poos ki Rat is a well known story of Munshi Premchand, famous writer of modern Hindu-Urdu literature.
Halku is the main character of the story "poos ki raat." He is a farmer who is deep in debt and has to pay heavy taxes. A crop is going to harvest in the coming chilly nights. He has to keep vigil at night to prevent animals from destroying his labor.
Halku was an Indian farmer who worked very hard against the dominant zamidari system. He lived in a village with wife and did his farming on a land belonging to a landlord. The maximum share of his harvest went to his landlord as a rate of interest on the borrowed money.
It was so cold that Halku felt as if all his blood had frozen and that ice rather than blood had filled his veins. When he tried to sleep, the cold tortured him and made his heart beat faster. Halku shivered and was unable to sleep because of the extreme cold.
