Harold was a ten year old son of Mrs. and Mr. Bramble. In fact, he was a prodigy. He loved his books and was exceptionally good at academics. He had won prizes at school in ‘spelling and dictation’. He had some interest in boxing too. In fact he liked the fact that his father was a famous boxer; and felt angry at his parents for having kept this secret from him.
Mrs. Bramble was an amiable, domestic woman who was always engrossed in Bill, her husband, and Harold, her son. She loved her family very much. She was extremely proud of her son’s intelligence. She took great care of him and ensured he took proper breaks from his studies. She is quite much worried about the future of Harold. She has a strong wish that Bill should win his last bout and then start his career anew as a boxing instructor at a school.
Mr. Bramble was a very nice man. He was a professional and fierce boxer who had won almost all his contests. He was so skilled that he could surprise his opponents with any maneuver. However, in his personal life he was very caring and soft. He had a sacrificing nature and was quite amenable to suggestions and persuasion of his family members. He was a loving father and understanding husband. For the sake of his son, he kept his profession hidden from him.
Major Percy Stokes was Mrs. Bramble’s brother. He often visited the Brambles and took keen interest in matters concerning Harold. He was also of the opinion that the secret of Bill’s real profession must be kept hidden from Harold. He believed Harold must be kept away from Bill’s professional life, as it could harm him in many ways. He played quite an important role in dissuading Bill from fighting against Murphy, the American boxer.
Jerry Fischer was Mr. Bramble’s trainer at White Hart. He was a tough trainer who did not like anyone’s interruptions while he was training. He visited Bramble’s house to convince him to fight against American boxer, Murphy. Actually, he had been training Bramble for this boxing bout, scheduled next week, but Bramble had refused to fight. Jerry Fischer thought that Bramble’s brother-in-law Percy Stokes was responsible for Bramble’s decision. So, he was annoyed with Percy and had a heated discussion. In a revengeful mood, Jerry Fischer revealed to Harold that his father, Bramble was not a commercial traveler, but a professional boxer.
