Hasan was a serang in a ship in which the author Dr A J Cronin was traveling from Liverpool to Calcutta. He was an ugly looking person with a really large head and short legs. Throughout the trip, he maintained a squatting position. When there was an outbreak of smallpox on board, Hasan did not for a minute hesitate to attend to the sick. Later, when the author offered him a monetary compensation, Hasan gently declined the offer saying he had no use for money as he had all that he needed.
