The Kabuliwala's name is Rahamat. He is from Afghanistan. He goes from door to door to sell things. He meets Rabindranath Tagore's five year old daughter, Mini. At first she is scared of him as he is a shabbily dressed rough man. He becomes friendly with Mini and gives her a lot of dry fruits. He does all this in remembrance of his own daughter who is almost of the same age. Though he is a rough man he fatherly affection for his daughter.
He asks Mini when she is going to her father in law's house. Which actually reflects his stay in prison. One day when there is a fight and he is caught and is being taken into custody he tells Mini that he is going to his father in law's house.
When he is released from prison and goes to meet Mini, he finds that she is getting married, he is reminded of the fact that his daughter would also have grown up in all these years.
