Laura Bridgman was the second daughter of an affluent farmer. Till the age of two she could speak properly. However, after that she was struck by the scarlet fever which made her blind and deaf. She even lost her sense of smell and taste. Her life was in obscurity due to her inability. However like any other girl, she had the longing to live a nice and healthy life. She was able to get a bright life by the help of Dr. Howe. She got good education also.
Dr. Howe had been her teacher. He was the doctor who dragged Laura out of her gloomy, quiet, isolated life and taught her to speak and read with her fingers. He taught her how to write and how to express her feelings. From him she got the chance to discover herself and others. He had won his own international reputation as a great social reformer mostly as an outcome of his work with Bridgman; nevertheless ultimately he came to view her as an unsuccessful mission.
