Lushkov is the protagonist in the story The Beggar by Anton Chekhov.

Lushkov is a pretentious and lying beggar who disguises his true identity and fools the giver. He sometimes is an expelled school master and sometimes an expelled student- this is his falsity. But in reality, he was a musician in the Russian choir where he got thrown out for his reckless drunkenness.

Lushkov is obviously rather feeble and he has no intention to work as far as he gets money from someone. He begs but never works. But when he learns to walk on the path shown by the kind Skvortsov to a better morality, he finally agrees to work, out of shame and guilt.

The cook Olga appears to him as a motherly figure who actually sobers him up by helping him chopping the logs and scolding him. Finally, Lushkov grows into a better personality with much dignity and a healthy income.
