In the novel 'The Sign of The Four' by Arthur Conan Doyle, Major Sholto is an officer and the friend of Arthur Morstan.  He is a greedy man and steals the treasure without leaving anything for Jonathan Small and Morstan. When Small approaches him to know the location of the treasure he agrees to retrieve it but keeps it all to himself instead of sharing it with the other two. He also, goes on to hide the body of Morstan. He goes on to live the rest of his life tormented by guilt and living in fear and ultimately dies after seeing Jonathan Small's face in the window.
