Mannu Bhandari started her career by working as a Hindi Professor. She was one of the leaders of the Nayi Kahani Movement. Bhandari is best known for the Hindi novels Mahabhoj and Aapka Banti. The post-independence writer portrays women differently as strong, intellectual and independent individuals. Her novels give an insight to the difficulties and struggles of women in the past.

Her father Suhsampat Rai Bhandari was a social reformer and a freedom fighter. He is credited with having produced the first English to Marathi and English to Hindi dictionaries.
