Mark Twain was a
person of importance in Helen Keller’s life after the two met over a lunch
meeting in New York. According to her, the author considered her as a
handicapped woman who was trying to overcome her difficulties. Surprised by her
intelligence and quickness, Mark Twain sent a letter to Henry H Rogers who was
his benefactor asking the latter to make arrangements for funding Helen Keller’s
education. He also wrote to his friend that it was not fair for Helen to
abstain from her studies because of poverty and that if she continued them, she
would become well-known in history. Eventually, they shared a special
friendship that lasted not just because of their political sentiments but also
because of common interests like travel and love for animals.
