Cox is a journeyman hatter who uses his room only at night. He is forever doubtful that his roommate Box who uses the room in the day shares it with their landlady Mrs Bouncer. Cox also constantly keeps complaining of how his coal, sugar, wood and Lucifer matches keep disappearing. Another complaint he always has is that the room always smells of tobacco smoke.
