Mr Irons was was a neighbour of Mr. William Wade, and a Latin scholar It was decided that Helen would study Latin under him. According to Helen, he was of a sweet nature with a great deal of experience. Apart from teaching her Latin, he would also help her with Arithmetic. Mr Irons read Tennyson's In Memoriam to her, and for the first time, she learnt to recognise an author and his style as she recognised a friend through the clasp of a hand.
