Mrs. Van Daan is an uncomplicates character, happy and anxious at the same time. Anne is rather unflattering and intolerant of this woman who is always criticising her for her ways. Mrs. Van Daan does not shine in her adversity. According to Anne's entries, she is interfering in her life and is a quarrelsome woman. Anne feels that although she takes undue interest in other children's lives, she is not aware of what her own children are up to. It is also evident that she has a bitter-sweet relationship with her husband as the fights between them are audible in the annexe at night.
