Nomita is the central character of the story Matchbox written by Ashapurna Debi. She is the wife of Ajith, a wealthy aristocratic man and the daughter of a widowed mother and dung picker. She looks like a queen. She is quite conscious of her rights and when her rights are denied she hisses like a snake and roars like a lion. She is very mature and knows where to react and how to keep silence to the derogatory comments by other women . She is pressurized by her husband's attitude, attitude of other womenfolk and her own mother. She is kind-hearted, mature , duty-bound, tolerant and a loving woman . She is a very bold woman , who inspires other woman how to empower themselves. She is the mouthpiece of many Indian woman.

Nomitha, the central character of the story is a  typical Indian women who is destined a life of mental conflict. Her    husband Ajith belongs to a wealthy family that resists in a three storied house. As the life partner to such a rich husband, she wants to lead a life of self respect and dignity. But her mother won't let her live so. Time to time her mother sends her letters seeking financial help. Here arises the mental conflict. One day goes to the extend of asking herself why her mother keeps on begging like this. Ajith does not like this and he insults Nomitha with harsh words  though she loves her husband, she does not tolerate such insults . So one day when there forms a quarrel, she calls him a common vulgar man. Nomitha outspoken by nature and hence no one attack her outright to her face. But instead they pinch her with sharp words. Nomitha cannot tolerate this too. Once when her bro-wife makes a common comment , Nomitha laughs a laughthat can bring a attractive flush to a white face.
