Character sketch of Philip from the chapter "The New School Fellow" of "The Mill On The Floss" written by George Eliot.
- Philip Wakem was the only son of an affluent lawyer, Mr Wakem. Mr Wakem and Mr Tulliver, Tom's father are foes and so Tom and Philip resume the same way initially.
- Philip is physically impaired with an impression on his back and so he is devoted and depressed most of the time. But gradually he brings out his intelligence in the manner he tells Tom many fascinating stories.
- He has a unique gift of narrating tales and is fortunate at drawing. Though he was physically challenged his mental health was nice. He soon comes to be his friend of Tom by displaying his intelligence.
