In the short story ‘The Race’, Ram Narayan plays an important role. He is a strict sports coach. He is a man of high ideals. He stands no nonsense and sets a strict regime for all who train under him. Although very firm and disciplined he has a soft heart.  

He empathises with all his trainees and sees to their needs. He is encouraging and inspiring. He has a sharp eye for talents and aims to perfect the trainees to become good sportsmen. It is for him that sports loving boys like Tarun got a chance to show their skills.
