- True friend- Sue had met Johnsy in spring and less than a year later, when Johnsy fell ill during winters, Sue stood by her as a true friend. Even though they had not been friends for long, Sue shared a deep friendship with Johnsy and genuinely cared for her.
- Emotional- When the doctor told Sue about Johnsy’s critical condition, Sue was truly upset and cried. However, she did not show Johnsy her emotions at all.
- Realistic and sacrificial- Sue was realistic about life. She knew that she had to earn money to be able to buy medication and food for Johnsy. Sue was in no way responsible for supporting Johnsy, but she did. She was willing to make monetary sacrifices for her friend, and was also giving Johnsy her time.
- Sensitive and motherly- Sue is sensitive to the situation. She does not want Johnsy to keep watching the leaf. She also breaks the news of Behrman’s death in a gentle way, and is quick to give Johnsy a hug.
