The story Crime and Punishment by RK Naraynan is a humorous short story and it really demonstrates the old saying: "spare your rod and spoil the child." The story shows the truth that the child has been spoiled by over caring and child parenting . This story reveals the comical situation between a teacher and his naughty student. R. K. Narayan strongly criticizes conventional methods of teaching and over-parenting in his story/. Whenever the boy blackmails, we can look at the teacher who is really afraid of the boy's parents. Teacher is prepared for the boy.
Explanation:
- In order to claim 30 rupees per month, the teacher teaches the little boy in the story. He doesn't have that patience and kindness to the boy. The very unfriendly boy makes the teaching harder. The teacher shows the courage to threaten him when the student makes the mistake. In this story we can see a teacher who is blackmailed by his student.
- Though it is clear to the reader that the teacher’s impatience is driven by the boy’s continual answering of the maths question incorrectly. This should not be enough for the teacher to be aggressive towards the boy.
- However the boy is clever enough to realise that he can manipulate the teacher now that the teacher has struck him, highlighting the pitfalls of corporal punishment. Rather than getting the boy to do as he wishes him to do. The teacher loses control of the boy
- Teacher is ready to do anything for the boy. The teacher is ready to play the role of a station master. He even runs behind the boy. Rather than the teacher being an instrument of education he becomes part of a game for the student. It is also noticeable that the teacher is somewhat in conflict with not only the boy but with the boy’s parents
- He acknowledges and adapts to the little boy's feelings. He tells stories. He feels sorry for beating him. The teacher was forced to punish the boy. In the end, the teacher felt sympathy on the pathetic and helpless child.
- He rescues the boy from his father from claiming that the boy is good with arithmetic. The teacher does not play the part of a friend, philosopher, guide and mentor in this story, therefore. A teacher should actually be a friend, philosopher, mentor and leader. But the teacher couldn't do that here. He even regards the kid as a gorilla. Should a pupil end up taking control from a teacher the result will be disastrous with no lessons learnt.
- But towards he end where the teacher was reliant on the boy staying quiet about him striking the boy. Now the boy needs the teacher to lie for him in order that his parent’s won’t scold him. If anything the teacher regains control over the boy by lying for him (which again is not right thing to do for a teacher)and telling his parents that everything is okay.
