In the poem he describes the cuckoo as a wandering voice, an art, a mystery , The darling of the spring etc..

Though he gas never seen the cuckoo he has always admired it. The cuckoo reminds him of his school-boy days . When he hears the cuckoo's voice he would look a thousand ways. He wants to see the cuckoo and it will remain a mystery.
