In contrast to George his brother, Tom was not a hardworking person. Tom inherited half a million pounds. Tom had not made any provisions for his future though he still appears to have landed on his feet.

Tom had not struggled in his life unlike his brother who had a wife and children to take care of. Whenever Tom would be in trouble his brother would bail him out of those situations for the fear of embarrassment. Tom lives his life recklessly. Tom's main concern is his life and his happiness. Furthermore, Tom shows George no allegiance. His character had the traits of someone untrustworthy for he borrowed money from George and didn't even return.
