Konstantin Makarich is Vanka's grandfather, who lives in the village and works as a night watchman for the Zhivarev family. He is described as a lively, little old man, and Vanka dwells especially on his everyday duties and habitual jokes. This easygoing fellow is the intended recipient of Vanka's letter.

Character sketch of vanka's grandfather

Vanka's grandmother was a small old man, He was about sixty-five years old. He was very lean and thin. He was a remarkably lively person and angelic with a smilling face. His eyes are bleary with a drink. In the evening, he wandered all over the estate while rattling his rattle while wearing a large sheepskin coat. He spent the day dozing off in the shadowy kitchen or fooling about with the cook and the kitchen staff. He strolled the estate at night while wearing a sheepskin coat and rattling a rattle. There used to be two dogs with him. One was Kashtanka the elder. The eel was the opposite. He would tie a rattle to his belt. He enjoyed making jokes and playful pinches at the chefs and maids. He would ask the women to take a nip while displaying his snuff box. Snuff would be placed into the nostrils by the women. They'd sneeze.
