He has never seen so many people together and is a little afraid to be at the station. Velu had run away from his village because he was fed up of his father's beating. His father was a drunkard who would take away all the earnings of his children. When Velu met a rag picker he was not ready to eat the left overs but hunger compelled him to do so.
