Character sketch of Hari from the novel Five Point Someone written by Chetan Bhagat
Five Point Someone, by Chetan Bhagat, is the story of three friends who come from different backgrounds but are in the Institute of Technology to become engineers. Hari Kumar or Hari is the narrator of the story and is basically a reserved and reticent guy though when it comes to talking about others, he is quite vocal. He is one who is not confident about himself. He does not reveal much about himself. He is very close to both his friends, Alok and Ryan. He balances the relationship between the three and is not as overt or presumptuous as Ryan or as subdued or sentimental as Alok. Extremely intelligent and creative, Hari is continuously deriding the grading system, the never misses an opportunity to undermine it. Hari has a very compelling opinions and he voices them quite unashamedly throughout the novel.
Hari is romantically involved with Neha, the daughter of a professor in his own college. This makes it difficult for them to meet often and he is able to meet her only rarely within the campus.
Being the narrator, he ends the novel with a soul stirring declaration that "I might have passed out of IIT, but in some ways my soul is still there"! With this he is able to strike a chord with many of the IITians who have read the book.
