King tut was named Tutankhaten at the time of his birth. On ascending the throne tut systematically brought about a restoration of the old religion which had been banned by Akenaten. He changed his name to tutankhamun in reverence to the old god Amun. He was thelast heir of a powerful family that had ruled Egypt and its empire for centuries. King tut was a teenager.
