Rigidity-
The American constitution is the most rigid constitution in the world. It can be amended by a lengthy and cumbersome process because of the complicated nature of the amendments and procedures. Sometimes, it takes years before an amendment becomes operative after it has been proposed.
Every amendment which can be moved in different ways must be rectified by 3/4th of the state. The rigidity of the constitution is obvious from the fact that during all these years, it has been in cooperation, only 26 amendments have been affected in the constitution.
Federal character-
The American constitution is federal in character. It was originally a federation of 13 states but due to administration of new states, a constitutional division of power has been made between the center and the federating states. The constitution absorbs the power of the center and leaves the residue of power
to be exercised by the federating states. All the powers delegated to the centre, are exercised by the states. The constitution thus creates a weak centre because residuary power has been given to the units.
Supremacy of the constitution-
The constitution is the supreme law of the land. Neither the centre nor the state can overwrite it. A law or an executive order repugnant to the constitution can be declared unconstitutional and invalid by the American Supreme Court.
