Characteristics of urbanization:

1. Community is large in size and density of population high.

2. Urban population is heterogeneous. It consists of different castes, classes, ethnic groups, religions, etc.

3. The pressure of mixture of people of all races, castes, classes, creeds, occupations and ethnic groups leads to a sense of anonymity, lost of identity and belongingness.

4. Permanency does not develop in urban relations. There is a high rate of geographical as well as social mobility in urban areas. Social relations, dwellings and jobs are shorter.

5. Social contacts or relations are impersonal. Impersonality become a convenient way of urban living.

6. People are physically crowded but socially distant. Social distance is a product of anonymity, impersonality and heterogeneity.

7. Order, regularity and the punctuality are the charac­teristics of urban life. Movements are controlled whether in the streets or indoor by rules and automation.

8. Most contacts are instrumental, a person uses another person as a necessity to fulfill purposes. The interaction is limited to what is necessary for functionalities and not with the whole community.
