I would say that the most important thing that differentiates Einstein from others was the Questions he found to ask.
Einstein was not a great mathematician (Hilbert nearly beat him to GR) and he was rarely seen in a science lab. He spent his time asking questions. Remarkably, he managed to answer some of his questions and, in doing so, he changed the course of knowledge for ever.
However, he didn't answer every question. Right up until his death he was still working on a Grand Unified Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Even today, 60 years later, we still don't have one.
