They are also known as amphibians of the plant kingdom because water is a very important need for completing life cycle.

Examples:- Riccia, Porella, Notothylus, Funaria etc.

Characteristics of Bryophytes are as follows:-

  • Vascular system is not present that's why they are not fully land successful plant.
  • They are known as the first land plant.
  • For fertilization water is required.
  • Parenchyma helps in water transportation in Bryophytes.
  • Roots are not present.
  • Generally grow in shady and moist places and those plants are known as sciophytes.
  • Antheridium and archegonium are the male and female sex organ respectively
  • Spore germination may be direct or indirect in them.
  • From one spore one plant will be formed.
  • Set up of multicellular filamentous body after spore formation is found which is known as protonema.
