  • They are composed of immature cells.
  • Absence of intercellular spaces.
  • Cells are oval, rounded or polygonal in shape.
  • Cells are always living and thin walled.
  • Cells are rich in cytoplasm with minute vacuoles.
  • Cell is diploid and shows mitotic cell division

Meristematic tissues are made up of actively dividing cells. Their only function is to produce more cells leading to the growth of the plant body . These tissues remain in continuous state of cell division.

Meristematic tissues are found at all growing points in a plant, like at the tips of root, stem and branches, where growth in length occurs. The growth in the thickness of stem is also due to meristematic tissues.

The main characteristics of meristematic tissues are as follows:

(i). The cells are small.

(ii). The cell walls are thin.

(iii). The cells are almost without vacuoles.

(iv). The cells actively divide and re-divide to add new cells.
