Hey there!
Characteristics of Annelida are :
- Habit and habitat :
- They are free living organisms some might be parasitic too (eg. leaches)
- They maybe aquatic and terrestrial.
- if terrestrial they live in moist soil.
2. Basic features :
- They have organ system of body organisation.
- They are bilateral, triploblastic and coelomate organisms.
- True Metameric segmentation is present.
3. Body wall :
- Their body wall is made of cuticle, epidermis and muscle layer.
- Body wall may contain minute setae that helps in locomotion. Longitudinal and circular muscle also helps in locomotion.
- Aquatic annelids like NEREIS possess lateral appendages called Parapodia.
4. Digestive System:
- They have complete digestive system as mouth and anus both are present.
- They have extracellular digestion.
5. Blood Vascular System :
- They have closed Vascular system.
- Their respiratory pigment is haemoglobin dissolved in plasma.
- In SABELLA, Chlorocruorin ( green coloured) is present.
6. Respiratory System :
- Respiration takes place through general body surface.
- Some may have external gills too.
7. Excretory system :
- Excretion takes place though help of Nephridia.
- Nitrogenous waste is ammonia in aquatic and urea in terrestrial annelids.
8. Sensory organs :
- Photoreceptors, touchreceptors and chemoreceptors are present mostly in the anterior part .
- some have distinct head.
9. Nervous System :
- Consists of a nerve ring and ventral, double, solid and ganglionated nerve chord.
10. Skeleton System :
- The coelomic fluid of the annelids functions as Hydrostatic skeleton.
11. Reproduction :
- They are mostly bisexual.
- eg. earthworms and leeches are bisexual. and Nereis is unisexual.
- Fertilisation is external.
- development maybe direct or indirect through a larva called TROCHOPHORE.
Hope it helps! :)
