Well, first of all, we all know what is actually a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction is the process of breaking down the chemical bonds of the reacting substances (reactants) and making new bonds to form new substances (products).

Now, if we are looking deeply behind the characteristics of a chemical reaction, then we can have the following :

(A) Evolution of gas : In many chemical reactions, one of the products is a gas which is gradually evolved. For example, when Zinc reacts with Sulphuric acid (dilute), hydrogen gas is evolved, with an effervescence.

(B) Change of colour : Certain chemical reactions can be seen as the property of changing colour of a substance (must a reactant). For example, When a few pieces of iron are dropped into a blue coloured copper sulphate solution, the blue colour of that solution fades and eventually turns into light green colour due to the formation of ferrous sulphate.

(C) Formation of Precipitates : Certain chemical reactions are characterised by the formation of insoluble solid substances called precipitates. The most common example is the reaction of SODIUM CHLORIDE with SILVER NITRATE forming a white insoluble precipitate of SILVER CHLORIDE along with Sodium Nitrate solution.

(D) Change of state : Many chemical reactions involve change of state. For example, ammonia gas when reacts with hydrogen chloride gas produce solid ammonium chloride.
