The convict is one of the most important character in the play. He is a foil to the Bishop. Once he was an ordinary ‘man’ with human qualities. He had a little cottage with vines growing in it. He was living with his wife Jeanette. Then suddenly his fortune changed for the worst. He was out of job with no money. His wife was ill and he had no food. He stole to buy food for her. He was caught and sentenced to ten years in the prison.
The convict was a victim of circumstances. He was punished so cruelly for such a petty offence. The prison life made him a wild beast. They chained him up like a wild beast and lashed him like a hound. He was fed on filth (dirt) and covered with vermin (insects). They took away his name, his soul and he was reduced to a number 15729.
One day he escaped from the prison. The convict became a hard-hearted criminal. He lost faith in God and human values. When he enters the Bishop’s house he threatens to kill him if he plays any tricks with him. However, the Bishop’s hospitality and his noble gesture impress him to a great extent.
Now the convict was a transformed man again. The Bishop saved him from going to the ‘hell’ again. He told a lie to the police that the candlesticks were given to him as a gift. It left a deep impression on the convict. He wept like a child and repented. His faith in God and humanity returned and he was a “man” again.
