In geology, a crust is the outermost layer of a planet. The crust of the Earthis composed of a great variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The crust is underlain by the mantle. The upper part of the mantle is composed mostly of peridotite, a rock denser than rocks common in the overlying crust.

The Earth's crust is an extremely thin layer of rock that makes up the outermost solid shell of our planet. In relative terms it's thickness is like that of the skin of an apple. It amounts to less than half of 1 percent of the planet's total mass but plays a vital role in most of Earth's natural cycles.

=> The crust can be thicker than 80 kilometers in some spots and less than one kilometer thick in others. Underneath it lies the mantle, a layer of silicate rock approximately 2700 kilometers thick. The mantle accounts for the bulk of the Earth

• It has an average density of 2.7g/cc

• It is rich in felsic minerals such as quartz, feldspar (mainly K-feldspar), micas etc.. i.e. Silica and aluminium rich minerals.

• It is rich in light colored (leucocratic) minerals.

• It is brittle in nature when compared to the relatively ductile behaviour of mantle rocks. That's why you see fractures, faults and joints on the surface.
