The hydrosphere is the liquid watercomponent of the Earth. It includes the oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The hydrosphere covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many plants and animals. The hydrosphere, like the atmosphere, is always in motion.

The Hydrosphere is one of the four domains of the Earth which comprise water that surrounds all of us. Anything related to water is a part of the hydrosphere.

Characteristics Of Hydrosphere Are:-

  • The hydrosphere includes all the water on the earth in any form:
  1. Solid form, such as snow and glaciers.
  2. Liquid forms such as oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and underground water.
  3. Gaseous forms such as vapours and moisture in the atmosphere.
  • All life depends on water from the tiniest bacteria to the largest elephant or whale. Liquid water makes the earth a special planet.
  • It is because of the water cycle that life exists on earth.
  • The amount of water vapour in the air affects the weather.
  • Oceans have a moderating influence on the climate of coastal areas.
  • Water is required for irrigation and various daily needs. It helps in generating electricity.
  • Marine life in oceans provides a source of livelihood.
