Lingua Franca, known by different names and one such name is “common language”.  It is a “functional term”.   It does not have any “linguistic history or language structure.”  It is used both officially and between people (religious, cultural purposes etc.).  For example, if someone comes from America and doesn’t know Tamil/Hindi, if you know English, then, you converse in that.  It is known as Lingua Franca.  The second language used in schools, here, “English” is known as Lingua Franca.

Lingua Franca is actually a language or dialect system for communication between two people or groups with different native language or between people who don't know each other language. In practical, lingua franca is just a functional term. There is not particular history regarding this term. Different countries have tries such but these language lack the global adaptation .This term actually originated from the  Mediterranean Lingua Franca which was also the one language.

Hope this helps.
