Explanation:

There is something about August. There&’s the 15th, our Independence Day, and also 22she srabon, the death anniversary of a man who lived and died in British India and yet could write lines like, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high… into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”

Talking about Rabindranath Tagore in any context is a formidable task. The voice peters out in awe and nervousness. Yet, oddly enough, the simplicity of the man dazzles. Long before post-colonial critics coined the phrase transnationalism, our poet raised the issue in both prose and poetry. In his novel Gora (1909), Tagore creates a protagonist whose very existence becomes ironic in the context of his times and also in the excessive religious zeal he evinces for the better part of the narrative. As a young, untried man, Gora strongly supports casteist segregation as an integral part of his Hindu-Indian identity. He believes enduring criticism about the meaner aspects of religion will result in ultimate disintegration and therefore zealously defends Hinduism in all its retrogression. However, his experiences bring home the realisation that in spite all his struggle to know his country — especially the poor and the oppressed — to Hindu zealots he has become a religious figurehead, whereas all his persuasion has failed to prevent his Hindu friend from desiring to marry the Brahmo girl he loves. Gora&’s life is thus riven by contradictions.

Gora is Rabindranath&’s suave and sophisticated rebuff to the English lords. Instead of lashing out at them, he makes one of their ilk an orphan who is adopted by a Hindu Brahmin household (Gora is the orphaned infant of Irish victims of the 1857 mutiny). From the centre Tagore gently pushes the master race to the periphery. At a time when the Bengali is keen to adopt the ways and practices of the British sahib, we have an Irish changeling who unknowingly roots in favour of the national consciousness and pride of a country colonised by his race and it is not even a secret that is kept till the end by the narrator. Rather, the reader is made party to it almost from the outset. Gora&’s origins must have given a fillip to the sagging pride of the contemporary reader. Yet the birth-secret is a launching pad and not a culmination point.
