A period is a horizontal row of the periodic table. There are seven periodsin the periodic table, with each one beginning at the far left. A new periodbegins when a new principal energy level begins filling with electrons.
The periodic table also has a special name for its vertical columns. Each column is called a group. The elements in each group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbital.
