- They are commonly called sponges.
- They are generally marine.
- They are asymmetrical.
- They are primitive multicellular animal.

- They have a water transport or canal system.
- Water enters through minute pose called ostia in the body.
- The water then enters the central cavity which is called spongocoel.
- And then water exits from the body through osculum.
- The pathway of water transport is helpful in food gathering and as well as for respiratory exchange.

- Choanocytes aur collar cells are lined up in the spongocoel and the canals.
- The digestion is intracellular.

- The process of fertilization is internal and the development of the zygote is indirect having a larval stage which is morphologically different from the adult stage.
