Some of the main characteristics of soil are given below:

Explanation:

1. The surface of the Earth which contains many important organic minerals and nutrients and serves as the medium for the growth of different plants is called as soil.

2. The soil composition includes the following: 45% minerals, 25% water, 25% air and 5% organic substances.

3. Soil may be black in colour, brown, red, orange or yellow in colour. By seeing the colour of the soil, we can characterize soil. For example, black or deep brown colored soil contains high organic content whereas soil that is yellow, orange or red in colour is rich in iron.

4. The organic matter that is present in the soil is of two forms: litter and humus. Litter can be plant litter, soil litter, etc, and these provides nutrients to the topmost layer of soil. Humus is dark matter which is rich in nutrients formed by plant and animal decomposition.
