* It is a vascular and mechanical tissue.

* The main function of xylem is to carry water and mineral salts upwards from the root to different parts of shoot.

* It is composed of cells of four different types-

1. Vessels

2. Tracheids

3. Xylem parenchyma

4. Fibre

* Since walls of the Tracheids, vessels and fibres of Xylem are lignified, they give mechanical strength.

The most distinctive xylem cells are the long tracheary elements that transport water. Tracheids and vessel elements are distinguished by their shape; vessel elements are shorter, and are connected together into long tubes that are called vessels. Xylem also contains two other cell types: parenchyma and fibers.
