Alfred Russel was a dentist by profession,an old man , and a jew. When the Germans conquered Holland ,they started targetting the Jews. In order to escape by the German regime , Mr. Dussel was also allowed to join the Frank andVan Daan' s family in the annexe . their secret hiding place. Initially when Mr. Dussel comes to annexe ,Anne refer to him in her diary as a nice man , on the basis of whatever they knew about him . But soon he started showing his true colours . On his arrival he made enquiries about things such as when the charwoman came , when he. could use the bathroom etc. Though there was nothing wrong in enquiring about these things what was surprising was that he asked everything twice which showed that he was slow in grasping things and was not very sharp . Anne finds him selfish , self centred and mean . Though he shared a room with Anne , he was not very forthcoming in sharing even the furniture of the room with her Anne wanted to use the study table in the room for just a few hours in the afternoon and that too when Mr . Dussel was resting but he rudely refused. Only after the intervention of Anne' s father did he agreed to share it with her . He was not in the least sensitive towards a young girl in her teens . He was critical of her behaviour and did not miss any opportunity to criticize her. He had peculiar habits such as using the lavatory too frequently , doing exercises etc. Even during the meal time he kept silent . He had a set routine life and he adhered to it. He was also short-tempered and very egoistic . Anne did not think highly of his skills as a dentist also . He , in brief , does not appear to be a likeable person
