The narrator's father, Arthur.H.Keller, was a captain in the Confederate Army. He was a very loving and indulgent person. He loved his family dearly and rarely left them except for hunting season. He loved his dogs and his gun too. He was the Editor of a newspaper. He was also a celebrated story-teller. Once the narrator had acquired language, he used to spell his cleverest anecdotes on her palm and would be really pleased to hear her repeat them at an opportune moment. The narrator also tells us that he was a very hospitable person, almost to the point that his hospitality could be considered a flaw. He seldom came home without bringing a guest with him. He raised the finest watermelons and the country's best berries in his garden and he led Helen from tree to tree, from wine to wine and found delight in whatever pleased her. He brought Helen the first ripe grapes and the choicest berries to please her
