The character of the Chinaman in the story ‘Maternity’ is the most touching. He is portrayed as the guardian angel in the story. ‘Maternity’ is a thought provoking short story by Lilika Nakos. It deals with the issue of racial discrimination.
Mikhail is a young Armenian refugee with his baby brother on his back. His mother died when the baby was born. Mikhail is unable to earn his living as he has to find a wet nurse to feed his brother. Desperately he seeks a woman who could feed the baby with milk. The other refugees of his kin turn him down angrily. When he searches in another camp they too reject him as the sight of the starving baby frightens them. The China Man is the only person who helps him.
The China Man is the only human among all the others in the true sense of the word. It is only he who exhibits humanity. Despite being of a completely different race and culture he helps Mikhail. He is full of warmth and kindness. In spite of being a poor refugee he takes Mikhail and the baby to his camp and gets the baby fed by his wife who too has a baby. In the beginning the wife was reluctant as the babies horrifying looks scared her but it was the China-Man’s assurance and her maternity that she fed the infant. The China Man is thus portrayed as the Guardian Angel in the story.
