Character sketch of Sita in' The Angry River '
Ruskin Bond, the famous British Indian writer is well known for his stories and novels mostly based on Nature and human relations.
' The Angry River ' is one such short story that reflects the positivity of life in spite of all the sorrows and hardships that accompany it.
The story pivots round the character of a small girl called Sita. The very name Sita alludes to the mythological Sita of the Ramayana. She creates an image of chastity and innocence.
In ' The Angry River ' Sita is pure and innocent as her namesake. She lives with her grandparents beside a river.
Sita is a simple girl. She is hard working and obedient. She is generous and not at all demanding like other little girls of her age.
She lives with her aged grandparents and helps her grand mother with her household chores. She is contented with her only toy- her doll Mumta.
When her grandmother falls ill and is taken to the hospital by her grandfather Sita stays back home. Being obedient and caring, she collects her grandparents essentials and climbs up a peepul tree, as advised by her grandfather, when the river swells with rain and engulfs her house.
Sita is an optimistic girl. She holds on to life positively. When she almost drowns as the tree she clings to uproots, she doesn't give up hope. She is a good learner and has learnt her lesson of survival from the crow in the tree she had held on too. The crow amidst all calamities tries to save its eggs in its nest.
When Sita is saved by the boatsman boy Krishan she happily eats the mangoes offered to her. She finds them delicious .
Back home she finds her grand mother dead and her doll washed away but she leads life positively with her grandfather.
To remain cheerful and creative she even learns how to play the flute gifted to her by Krishan.
From the character of Sita we learn the beautiful lesson of the art of living.
